Early Years has a new curriculum this year and the guidance can be found below, alongside the supporting document 'Development Matters'. This will give you an idea of the types of mile stones that children are expected to meet at different ages and why learn through play-based activities in the first year of school, in preparartion for Year One.

Alongside the Early Years Curriculum, our Year 1 children will also be taught the knowledge and skills needed in the Primary National Curriculum.

Maths and Science will both be taught as a year group for all Year Ones.

Autumn 1 Topics - Me and My World

This half term we all be getting to know each other and the routines of the classroom and the school day. We will be learning all about ourselves - who we are, what we look like and parts of our bodies, where we live and what makes us all unique and special. This will be supported by our main class book Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers.

Our PE days this half term will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays but all children should bring their P.E. kit into school on a Monday and take it home on a Friday each week. We will have one inside and one outside lesson per week.

At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual planner, along with any other messages for school staff. These will be checked every morning by an adult. At first, children in EYFS will not bring home a reading book as we are starting a new phonics and reading programme called Read Write Inc (further information to follow) but they will bring home a 'Reading for Pleasure' book to share together at home.
