What are we reading in Spring 1?
The main text for our writing work is 'The Selfish Giant' by Oscar Wilde, with our final writing outcome to write a version of the book's narrative. We will work on using a variety of punctuation in our work, with a particular focus on knowing how and when to include semi-colons and commas to clarify meaning.
Then in our Pathways to Read sessions, our book is, 'The Happy Prince and Other Tales', also by Oscar Wilde. We will be working on our skills of drawing inferences (inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions) and to justify these inferences with evidence from the text. Additionally, we will evaluate the authors’ language choice, including figurative language.
What are we learning in Spring 1?
In Maths this half term, we will continue to follow ‘Maths No Problem’. Year 6 will be practising their skills to answer questions about decimals, measurements and percentages. Year 5 children will focus on multiplication and division, graphs and charts and fractions.
In Science, the Year 6 children will have the topic of Electricity - making circuits. The Year 5 children will learn about Animals including humans - life cycles.
This half term, during RE, Year 5 and 6 will learn about separate religions, Hindu and Islam.
In humanities, we will focus on Geography and investigating the enquiry question - Why are Rainforests Important to us?
During our Computing lessons we will look at the use of Coding in video games and in Art and Design, we study symbolism in art, Street Art and powerful imagery.
In our PSHE Jigsaw lessons, we will be thinking about our Dreams and Goals.
Home Reading
Our school aim is to complete at least 5 reading at home sessions each week. We will be monitoring reading at home closely by checking reading diaries each day and changing children’s books once a week, if required. We encourage children to develop their own sense of 'reading for pleasure' and would love to see the texts that children are also reading at home.
PE
For this half term, we will have two lessons of PE throughout the week, on a Tuesday and a Friday. As per the PE uniform policy, children are to come dressed in their indoor PE kit on a Tuesday and their outdoor PE kit on a Friday.
Spelling
Each Friday, we will complete a spelling test on the words taught that week. Children will be taught these spellings during the week, with a focus on applying the rule that is being taught. Children are then expected to practise their spellings further at home using Spelling Shed, a new assignment will be posted on a Friday, along with a practise sheet to be used at home.
Online Learning Resources
Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school, their usernames and passwords can be found in their School Planner. All children are familiar with how to use these. Clicking on each name will take you to the website.
