What are we reading in Autumn 1?

The main text for our writing work is ‘Star of Fear, Star of Hope’ by Jo Holestlandt and our final writing outcome is to ‘write a story with a flashback from another character’s point of view’. We will use role play, speech writing and focus on including fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and passive verbs in our lessons.

Then in our Pathways to Read sessions, our book is, 'Poems from The Second World War’ by Gaby Morgan. We will be looking at drawing inferences (inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions) . Making comparisons within and across books and evaluating authors’ language choice, including figurative language.

What are we learning in Autumn 1?

In Maths this half term, we will follow ‘Maths No Problem’ and Year 6 will start by looking at numbers to 10 million, followed by using the four
operations. Year 5 children will look at numbers to 1 million, followed by addition and subtraction.

In Science, our whole school topic is 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. We will have a focus on studying and classifying the wildlife in our locality, taking part in workshops run by Chester Zoo.

This half term, during RE, we will focus on Christianity and study the focus question: ‘How do Christians mark the ‘turning points’ on the journey of life?’ In humanities, we will study the topic of ‘Rebuilding Britain’, this will include considering some of the ways in which Britain, and British people, were affected by events during the Second World War. As well as considering ways in which the creation of the NHS improved the lives of people living in Britain.

During our Computing lessons we will look at ‘our online life’. In DT, we will become photographers and work towards creating a Cityscape photo montage.

Home Reading

Our school aim is to complete at least 5 reading at home sessions each week. We will be monitoring reading at home closely by checking reading diaries each day and changing children’s books once a week, if required. We encourage children to develop their own sense of 'reading for pleasure' and would love to see the texts that children are also reading at home.

We will have two lessons of PE throughout the week, on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. As per the PE uniform policy, children are to come dressed in their indoor PE kit on a Wednesday and will need to wear their school uniform on a Tuesday, with their swimming kit and snack in a separate bag for the afternoon.

Each Friday, we will complete a spelling test on the words taught that week.  Children will be taught these spellings during the week, with a focus on applying the rule that is being taught. Children are then expected to practise their spellings further at home using Spelling Shed, a new assignment will be posted on a Friday, along with a practise 'Look, Cover, Write' sheet.

Online Learning Resources

Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school, their usernames and passwords can be found in their School Planner.  All children are familiar with how to use these. Clicking on each name will take you to the website.
