What are we reading in Summer 2?

For the first week of this half term we will be finishing our Pathways to Write lessons from Summer 1,'Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau' book by Jennifer Berne. We will use our Mastery Skills of including relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or an omitted relative pronoun, using a range of devices to build cohesion (conjunctions, synonyms, adverbials, punctuation) and including hypens, to write a biography.

For our second Pathways to Write text, we will be reading 'Sky Chasers' by Emma Carroll. We will focus on our writing skills to:

• Recognise vocabulary and structures for formal speech and writing, including subjunctive forms
• Identify the audience and purpose for writing
• Choose the appropriate register
• Use semi-colons, colons or dashes to mark boundaries between independent clauses

Which will enable us to write a successful end of unit piece, writing the next chapter of Sky Chasers in the style of the author from two different viewpoints.

Then in our Pathways to Read sessions, our book is the same as our writing book,'Sky Chasers'. Our focai will be to draw inferences (inferring characters’
feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions); justify with evidence and to evaluate authors’ language choice, including figurative language.

What are we learning in Summer 2?

In Maths this half term, we will continue to follow ‘Maths No Problem’. Year 6 will learn about Ratio, Geometry, negative numbers and graphs and averages. Year 5 children will focus on geometry, position and movement and measurement.

In Science, the Year 6 children will continue to learn about the topic of Light this half term. The Year 5 children will continue to learn about Proporties and Changing Materials.

This half term, during RE, Year 5 will learn about the religion of Christianity, with the focus question, 'How do people decide what to believe?'

Year 6 will learn about Buddhism, with the focus question being, 'What do we mean by a ‘good life’?'

For Humanities, we will study History, with our enquiry question being 'How did the Maya civilisation compare to the Anglo-Saxons?' We will learn about Maya cities and Gods and Godesses.

In our PSHE Jigsaw lessons, we will be thinking and discussing the changes that will be happening to our bodies and in our lives during puberty and transitions to High School or Year 6.

Home Reading

Our school aim is to complete at least 5 reading at home sessions each week. We will be monitoring reading at home closely by checking reading diaries each day and changing children’s books once a week, if required. We encourage children to develop their own sense of 'reading for pleasure' and would love to see the texts that children are also reading at home.

PE

For this half term, we will have two lessons of PE throughout the week, on a Tuesday and a Friday. As per the PE uniform policy, children are to come dressed in their indoor PE kit on a Tuesday and their outdoor PE kit on a Friday.

Spelling

Each week, we will complete a spelling test on the words taught that week.  Children will be taught these spellings in school, with a focus on applying the rule that is being taught. Children are then expected to practise their spellings further at home using Spelling Shed, along with a practise sheet to be used at home.

Online Learning Resources

Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school, their usernames and passwords can be found in their School Planner.  All children are familiar with how to use these. Clicking on each name will take you to the website.
