Spring 2
What are we reading in Cherry Class?
This half term will begin with a Pathways to Poetry unit based on the poem Night Sounds by Berlie Doherty. The children will explore the differing sounds that can be heard at night and will compose a poem of their own ideas in the style of Berlie Doherty. In Cherry Class this half term we are reading Major Glad, Major Dizzy by Jan Oke in Pathways to Write. All of our writing will be based around this book and we will be working towards writing a reocunt of historical events from the text from Major Glad's point of view. We will be learning to use the past and presnet tense correctly and consistently, using a wider range of subordinating conjucntions (because, when, that), consolidating our use of full stops, question marks and exclamation marks and then introducing apostrophes for singular posession. In Pathways to Read, we will be reading Owen and the Soldier by Lisa Tjhompson.
In Maths, we will work hard to improve our mental maths skills, using Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots to help with this. We will be focusing on grouping and describing 3D shapes and fractions. We will be finding 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 of shapes and amounts.
In Science, we will be looking at 'Uses of Everyday Materials.' The children will be learning about the properties of different materials with a real focus on expanding our vocabulary. We will condcut a series of investigations to test the suitability of materials for different purposes.
PE
PE kits should be brought into school on a Monday and are to be taken home on a Friday for washing. We will have indoor PE and will be doing gymnastics on Tuesdays and will have outdoor games on Thursdays where we will focus on developing our fundamentral movement skills and applying these to a range of different team games.
Reading
At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by an adult from Cherry Class. The children are split into different Read Write Inc. groups whilst in school and will have a different book focus for that week which can be accessed from home via Oxford Owl as well as sent home in their book bags each week. Their planners and books need to go home every night and come back into school every morning. We encourage all of our children to read five times per week.
Highlights from Spring 1
Art
We created our own version of Charlie Mackesy's famous art work and positive quotes from his book The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse. Our work was displayed at the Runcorn Shopping City as part of the Halton Primary Arts Network showcase that happens each year.
Science
YEar 2 became 'materials detectives' this half term as we investigated the materials all aorund us and how they were suited to thier uses. We also conducted some really interesting scientific investigations!
Online Learning Resources
Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can also access at home. All children are familiar with how to use these and their usernames and passwords can be found in their reading diaries. Please ask if you have any questions about these.

Google Classroom can be accessed through most electronic devices via the website or the app. Every child has been given their own Gmail address. They are able to log onto our online classroom using these details. Homework will be set weekly via Google Classroom.
