Summer 2

What are we learning about in Cherry Class?

This half term we are beginning with a poetry unit. We will be reading a range of animal themed poems from the book ‘I Am The Seed That Grew The Tree’. We will then be studying the book ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’ where we will be aiming to write our own story based on morals and acceptance of others. Our history topic is based around seaside holidays in the past. We will be needing some help from our older relatives and friends to share their own experiences on this topic! Our PSHE topic is entitled ‘Changing Me’. We will be learning about how we change and grow throughout our lives.

In Maths, we will work hard to improve our mental maths skills, using Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots to help with this.  We will be focusing on time and measurements (volume).

In Science, we will be studying 'Living Things and their Habitats' The children will be learning about the different habitats that we have in the UK and those from around the world. We will find out what pkants and animals live their and how they have adapted to their environment. We will also learn about simple food chains.

PE

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please come to school dressed in full PE kit on these days. We will be doing a range of athletics and also target games skills to prepare from invasion games in KS2.

Reading

At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by an adult from Cherry Class. The children are split into different Read Write Inc. groups whilst in school and will have a different book focus for that week which can be accessed from home via Oxford Owl as well as sent home in their book bags each week. Their planners and books need to go home every night and come back into school every morning. We encourage all of our children to read five times per week.

Highlights from Summer 2

Art and Design

We explored and developed a range of different art and design skills during this unit. We did some paper weaving, deigned some plates in the style of Clarice Cliff and we also made some clay tiles to take home!

Our visit to church

We brought our RE topic alive this half term by visiting St Michael’s Church. Our key question was ‘What unites the Christian community?’. It was great for cherry Class to see a Christian place of worship and see features in real life such as the lectern, altar and font.

Science

Year 2 had a great time this half term learning all about living things and their habitats. We also developed our reading and computing skills by fact finding using the books in our reading corner and the iPads.  We also went into the forest to search for microhabitats and find what lived there.

Online Learning Resources

Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can also access at home. All children are familiar with how to use these and their usernames and passwords can be found in their reading diaries. Please ask if you have any questions about these.
