Summer 2

We hope that you have all had a restful and fun half term holiday week.

Can One Person Make a Difference?

Our last half term in school as Year 2 Cherry Class!

For this half term, our Pathways to Write book is called 'The Selfish Giant', which is a beautfully illustrated book about acceptance, kindness and differences.  We will be learning skills that will help us to write our own version of the story with a focus on morals and acceptance.  Our Pathways to Read book is ‘Grimm's Fairytales’, which contains a variety of short texts.  We will also be learning to recite, create and perfom known and our own poems, with a focus on wildlife in our forests.

In Maths, we will continue to improve our mental maths skills, using Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots to help with this.  We will also be revisiting Number, specifically addition and subtraction.  Then we will move onto learning about volume.

In Science, we will be continuing the topic of Living Things and Habitats.  The children will be learning about how living things have habitats, which are suited to their differing needs.  They will also start to look at a simple food chain.

PE

Our PE day is on a Friday and we also have access to the school forest on this day. Due to our current provision in school, please ensure that your child comes into school dressed in their PE/outdoor kit. We encourage children to dress appropriately for all weathers, especially as the British weather can be unpredictable!  Also, as we still venture outside in the rain for our forest session, please think about suitable footwear and waterproofs.

Reading

At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by an adult from Cherry Class and their school books are changed on a Tuesday and Thursday.

For this half term, we are going to look at improving our ‘library area/reading area', so please let us know if you have any suggestions and ideas.

Spelling

Every Monday, a set of spellings will be given to the children to learn. These spellings will be introduced to the children through a discreetly taught spelling session. Children will be tested on these spellings on a Friday.  You will also find these spellings on The Spelling Shed, to help you to practise over the week. The Spelling Shed

Online Learning Resources

Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can also access at home. All children are familiar with how to use these and their usernames and passwords can be found in their reading diaries. Please ask if you have any questions about these.

In the event of a Covid-19 Bubble Closure

In the event of our bubble having to close, the children will be provided with remote learning via Google Classroom, which can be accessed through most electronic devices via the website or the app. Every child has been given their own Gmail address. They are able to log onto our online classroom using these details.

It is a national government requirement that children access our remote learning platform on the days that they would usually attend school, if their bubble is to close due to Coronavirus. It is important that good communication between school and parents/carers maintains during a bubble closure. We ask that all children respond to the daily task briefing on their Google Classroom homepage.

If you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Alternatively, please feel free to email any queries to the teachers in Cherry Class - mrsmcilroy@westfieldprimaryschool.com/mrscieslar@westfieldprimaryschool.com
