Summer 1

This half term, the whole school are taking part in a “Save the Planet” themed unit for English. In our writing lessons, we will be learning about the effects of plastic pollution through “Alba the Hundred Year Old Fish” and in our reading lessons we will be reading “Fantastically Great Women Who Saved the Planet”.

Most of our maths this half term will build on fractions from last half term by looking at decimals, plus continuing to practise our times tables.

In science, we will be learning about electricity for the first time and even building some electrical circuits!

In our computing unit, we will be using special effects and greenscreens to create our own Jurassic Park inspired short movie. We will be analysing famous paintings in art and looking at different relationships in PSHE. Our R.E. lessons will build on last half term's "sacrific in Christianity" to "commitment in Islam". Our P.E. lessons this half term will be hockey and tennis. In French, we will be learning French foods and how to order in a cafe.

Our PE days are Monday (hockey) and Friday (tennis). Please come into school in PE kit on these days. All children will need a white polo shirt, black shorts/joggers and trainers or P.E. pumps. Some of our P.E. lessons are outside so please dress accordingly.

Home Reading

At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by the class teacher and reading at home is worth two dojo points as a reward in class. Reading books will mostly be changed on a Tuesday and a Friday.  Each child should have 1 free choice book and 1 book band book. Please remember that you also have access to Bug Club where there are loads more books online for you to choose from! If you read online using Bug Club, this can be recorded in reading diaries also.

Our homework policy has recently changed. Children in Year 4 are still expected to read for 15 minutes 5 times a week. Spellings will also be given on a Friday and children can use Spelling Shed to practise these. We also encourage time on TT Rockstars too. Instead of weekly quizzes and short tasks, children will be given a half term long project to complete. This half term, the children have been asked to present information they have found out about volcanoes. How this is presented is up to them but we encourage creativity and home research.  If you have any difficulties with the homework, please feel free to contact Miss Monaghan using the email addresses

Each Friday, we will complete a pre-teach spelling test on the words for the following week.  Children will then be taught these spellings over the week, with a focus on applying the rule that is being taught.  Children are then expected to practise their spellings further at home using Spelling Shed. Spellings will be tested again each Friday.

Online Learning Resources

Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school, their usernames and passwords can be found in their School Planner.  All children are familiar with how to use these. Clicking on each name will take you to the website.
