Autumn Term 1 – What do we all wish for?

This half term, we will be reading Anthony Browne’s Gorilla. This is a beautifully illustrated book that follows the story of a lonely girl, a friendly gorilla and their enchanted night out. Hannah spends all of her time reading gorilla books, watching gorilla TV shows and drawing gorilla pictures. She longs to see a gorilla in real life but her father is always too busy to take her to the zoo. Then, on the night before her birthday, something extraordinary happens and Hannah’s wish comes gloriously true. To pair with this, we will be reading A World Full of Animal Stories UK: 50 favourite animal folk tales, myths and legends by Angela McAllister. We will travel the world with 50 best-loved tales, featuring creatures big and small. This beautifully-illustrated collection of classic stories brings together favourite animal-themed fables, myths and legends.

We will continue our travels in geography, learning about our European neighbours and comparing 5 European countries. In science this half term, we will be learning about teeth, digestive systems and food chains. In R.E., we will be learning about Hinduism and thinking about what a Hindu might learn through celebrating Diwali. This half term we will be focusing on art and design skills and how we can be safe online. Our music will be using a range of Abba songs to sing and learn the glockenspiel. We will also be describing portraits in French and swimming in P.E.

This term, Year 4 will be swimming for their P.E. lessons. Each child will need to bring a swimming costume to school in time for our lessons on a Wednesday. Please ensure girls have a one piece swimming costume and boys have swimming trunks no longer than their knees. Children may wear goggles and a swimming cap if they wish. No jewellery will be allowed and please ensure long hair is tied up.  Children will also need their own towel and a snack for after swimming, this must be a piece of fruit. Change for lockers is not required.

Home Reading

At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by the class teacher and reading at home is worth two dojo points as a reward in class. Reading books will mostly be changed on a Tuesday and a Friday.  Each child should have 1 free choice book and 1 book band book. Please remember that you also have access to Bug Club where there are loads more books online for you to choose from! If you read online using Bug Club, this can be recorded in reading diaries also.

Homework will be set on google classrooms each Friday at 12pm. This will consist of 1 short quiz to test what we have learnt over the past week and 1 task. Children are expected to complete their homework by the following Wednesday. If you have any difficulties with the homework, please feel free to contact Miss Monaghan using the email addresses

Each Monday, we will complete a pre-teach spelling test on the words for that week.  Children will then be taught these spellings over the week, with a focus on applying the rule that is being taught.  Children are then expected to practise their spellings further at home using Spelling Shed. Spellings will be tested again each Friday.

Online Learning Resources

Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school, their usernames and passwords can be found in their School Planner.  All children are familiar with how to use these. Clicking on each name will take you to the website.

Covid-19 Bubble Closure

In the event of our bubble having to close, Miss Monaghan will provide remote learning through Google Classroom.

It is a requirement that children access our remote learning platform on the days that they would usually attend school. It is important that good communication between school and parents/carers maintains during a bubble closure. We ask that all children respond to the daily task briefing on their Google Classroom homepage. This is so that the teacher can record who has been able to engage with the learning tasks.

If you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Alternatively, you can contact Miss Monaghan directly via her school email address
