Year 5 - Birch Class 2022 - 2023
Is there anything we can do before it’s too late?
This half term, our focus text is ‘The Hunter’ by Paul Geraghty. The story revolves around Jasmina, who plays at being a hunter in the African bush, pretending to shoot the mighty elephants. But during her games, Jasmina discovers a crying little elephant on his dead mother's side and realizes the horrors of hunting. Jasmina takes the frightened elephant into her care and brings it to safety. Linking to this, we also be looking at ‘African Tales: A Barefoot Collection’ by Gcina Mlophe and Rachel Griffin, an anthology which includes eight traditional tales from all over Africa.
Jigsaw and Science
This half term, Y5 will focusing on ‘Changing Me’ in Jigsaw which focuses on body image, puberty in girls and boys, and conception. Linking to this, Science will be looking at ‘Living Things including Humans’, this unit of work will coincide with Jigsaw by learning about puberty and the growth of a baby to old age.

Please complete five reading sessions a week!
Reading diaries must be signed by an adult or older sibling.
If reading is not completed at home, then time will be used at break/lunch to catch up on a missed reading session.
On Fridays, we will be having our usual pre-spelling assessment to see what we already know and children will then have a whole week to learn them. Paper copies of the spellings are sent home and an assignment is also created on Spelling Shed for children to access online.
Online Learning Resources
Alongside reading, children are encouraged to use TTRockstars, Spelling Shed, Prodigy and Bug Club at home to further their learning and progress. All logins should be printed and in their diaries.
