Year 6 - Oak Class 2020 - 2021
Where will our adventure take us to next?
This half term, our focus text is ‘Sky Chasers’ by Emma Carroll. Our adventure story will prompt further discussion about the adventures the children are about to embark upon in the next chapter of their schooling careers.
We plan to continue looking at our local area over the coming weeks; learning about the history of both Runcorn and Liverpool. At the end of the half term, children will take part in a virtual workshop led by the Museum of Liverpool to learn all about the history of our local city.
In the lead up to the end of term, there will be lots of lovely events planned for the children. The class have suggested some ideas that they would like to happen before leaving Westfield and we are trying to accommodate these requests in the best (and safest) way possible under our current restrictions. I can't wait to celebrate with everyone before we leave at the end of July!
Swimming lessons will take place every Wednesday. Please ensure that your child brings their swimming kit into school with them each week. Details on what they need can be found on our School Spider app. Children may bring a piece of fruit as a snack to eat upon returning to school in the afternoon.
HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION
Pupils will visit their chosen high school for two transition days this half term (Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th of July).
Children should arrive at their high school in their primary school uniform. Children are to register at their high school – please do not arrive at Westfield on those two mornings.
I can’t wait to hear how it all goes!
This half term, Y6 will complete our ‘Relationships and Sex Education’ unit of study. It is a statutory requirement for children to learn about puberty. As per our RSE policy, parents/carers have the right to request their child to be withdrawn from lessons that explicitly teach about human reproduction,
This will be taught during two sessions this half term and thus optional participation is only relevant to those lessons. Please see our dedicated school webpage and School Spider app for more details.
To keep up to date with what we are learning about in the classroom, follow our class twitter account! We had some technical difficulties last half term, but we are back up and running for Summer 2!

Our Oak Class Family
We are really lucky to have lots of people that help us in Oak Class.
Here are our key adults:
- Mrs Davies – Class Teacher
- Mrs Berry – Teaching Assistant
- Miss Evans – PPA Teacher
- Mrs Thomas – Midday assistant
- Mrs Jones - Volunteer
At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary and signed by an adult or older sibling. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by Mrs Davies. Rewards are given to those who read at home.
Every Monday, ten spellings will be given to the children to learn. These spellings will be introduced to the children through a discreetly taught spelling session. Children will be tested on these spellings on a Friday. Children can use our online resource ‘Spelling Shed’ to practise their spellings throughout the week.
Online Learning Resources
Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school. All children are familiar with how to use these.
Spelling Shed: https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/
Purple Mash: https://www.purplemash.com/sch/westfieldwa7
Covid-19 Bubble Closure
In the event of our bubble having to close, Mrs Davies will provide remote learning through Google Classroom. Every child has been given their own Gmail address. They are able to log onto our online classroom using these details.
It is a requirement that children access our remote learning platform on the days that they would usually attend school. It is important that good communication between school and parents/carers maintains during a bubble closure. We ask that all children respond to the daily task briefing on their Google Classroom homepage. This is so that Mrs Davies can record who has been able to engage with the learning tasks.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office.
Alternatively, you can contact Mrs Davies directly via her school email -firstname.lastname@example.org
