Year 6 - Oak Class 2021 - 2022
'Is it ever right to fight?'
This half term we will be looking at the book 'Star of Hope, Star of Fear.' by Jo Hoestlandt. Set in France, during the Nazi occupation of World War II, a gentile child named Helen recalls the mounting persecution of her Jewish friend. She wonders why does her best friend, Lydia, have to wear a yellow star? Why are people in hiding and using strange names? What is Lydia afraid of?
We will be looking at how Britain bounced back after WWII, and looking at various poems regarding WWII. We will be heading back to a full curriculum, taking part in all our subjects, learning about Ligh in science, becoming budding photographers in art, learning what it means to 'Live a good life' in RE, making sure we stay safe online in our computing, taking part in dance and outdoor adenturous activities in PE.
All Y6s are invited to come on our residential set for November 24th-26th. Please get your deposits paid as soon as to ensure you have a place. We will be sending further information out about this closer to the time.
HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS
Just a reminder that applications for High Schools need to be completed by 31st October. If you need any assistance please contact the office.
Every Tuesday, spellings will be given to the children to learn. These spellings will be introduced to the children through a discreetly taught spelling session. Children will be tested on these spellings on a Friday.
Our Oak Class Family
We are really lucky to have lots of people that help us in Oak Class.
Here are our key adults:
- Mr Parker – Class Teacher
- Miss McGreal– Teaching Assistant
- Miss Evans – PPA Teacher
At Westfield, we expect all children to complete five reading sessions a week. These should be recorded in each child’s individual reading diary and signed by an adult or older sibling. Pupils' diaries are checked every morning by Mr Parker. Rewards are given to those who read at home.
Online Learning Resources
Our children have access to a range of online resources to aid their learning. Here are the links to some useful websites that children can use whilst not in school. All children are familiar with how to use these.
Spelling Shed: https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/
Purple Mash: https://www.purplemash.com/sch/westfieldwa7
In the event of a child having to isolate, remote learning will be provided through Google Classroom. Every child has been given their own Gmail address. They are able to log onto our online classroom using these details.
It is a requirement that children access our remote learning platform on the days that they would usually attend school. It is important that good communication between school and parents/carers maintains during an isolation period. We ask that all children respond to the daily task briefing on their Google Classroom homepage. This is so that the class teacher can record who has been able to engage with the learning tasks.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office.
