Parent Information for September 2020

September 2020

Monday 20th July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been welcomed news that Westfield Primary School can open again in September and hopefully we can get back to some kind of normality for you and your children. To begin with, there will be a few changes to the school day to ensure the safety of all children, parents/carers and staff.

I hope that the information outlined below will give you a clear understanding to how we are operating the reopening for all children and what it means for your family.

Date for reopening

School will reopen for all pupils on Thursday 3rd September 2020.

In and out of the school grounds

The school grounds will be pedestrian only from 8:15am till 3:30pm.

With more children back and in order to maintain social distancing for families, we will continue to operate a one-way system to get the children in and out of school. This has worked really well for the children who are currently in school. Signs have been put up around the school grounds to maintain the flow and staff will be on hand to support. We will be opening the gate on Crofton Road but as a ‘way in’ to school only.

Please, only 1 adult per family for drop off/pick up. If you are a one parent family and do not have anyone to support looking after a younger sibling as you bring your child/ren to school, they can be with you, however, you must stay together as you move through the one-way system and maintain social distancing at all times.

Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6 children

If accessing school through the main gates, go left down the ramp and across the carpark. Social distancing markers have been set up on the ramp and towards the KS2 playground for you to wait to go in. A hand washing station will be available for you and your children to sanitise before entering school. If accessing school from Crofton Road, go across the carpark and up to the KS2 playground. A member of staff will direct you to your classroom.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children

If accessing school through the main gates, follow the signs to the right to join the social distancing markers to wait to enter school. A hand washing station will be available for you and your children to sanitise before entering school. At the gate you will be called, one at a time to the classroom door. If accessing school from Crofton Road, you will need to follow the one way system to the front of the school, out then in through the car park gates, to follow the path to the right. I do apologise that this might mean two trips around the one-way system for some families.

Start and end of the day

Each class is now a ‘bubble’ and guidance states, to ensure minimum risk to children and staff, the class bubbles must be kept separate. In order to do this we will still need to stagger the start and end of the day times.

For families with more than one child to drop off, we need to limit the time that you are waiting around. Please bring all your children at the time allocated for your oldest child. For example, if you have a child in Oak class and a child in Maple class you will bring them both at Oak class start time of 8:40am and pick both up at 3pm. Staff will be around to help direct.

It is really important that you only arrive at your allocated time.

Classrooms, break and lunchtime

  • School will look and feel different for the children as they will need to stay in their class bubble at all times.
  • We are planning as much outdoor learning as possible, however, they will not mix with another bubble during any part of the day.
  • Free School meal and paid lunches will be provided in the form of a grab bag/packed lunch and will be eaten in the classroom, followed by outside play. Children can bring their own packed lunch as before. Each class will have its own Midday Assistant.
  • Classrooms will look different. Desks have been allocated to the children and have been set facing forward. The children will have their own equipment and resources to use, which will be cleaned at the end of each day. We will provide the children with everything they will need in the classroom.
  • In Year 1 and Reception, the children will be given access to some continuous provision and carpet time, maintaining a safe distance where possible.
  • To start with, the children will only need a freshly filled water bottle and a snack.
  • Children will be asked to wash their hands on several occasions throughout the day.
  • Lunch and break times will be staggered so that class bubbles do not mix.

Curriculum and learning

We will be teaching all subjects from the National Curriculum. Children will be participating in PE lessons and we ask that they come to school in sports wear/PE kit on that day. PE days will be announced on the first day back and will start week commencing 7th September.

First aid and illness

Any open cuts or wounds must be covered. A nominated first aider, wearing personal protection, will deal with any accidents in school.

Your child must not come to school if they are showing any signs of Covid-19. Please follow the guidance by:

  • ensuring that anyone who has coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, or has someone in their household who does, does not attend school - this means if your child, or someone in your household, has symptoms you should not send them to school
  • engaging with the NHS Test and Trace process so that cases can be identified and action taken - this means if your child develops symptoms, you should arrange for them to get a test and you should inform school of the results of that test

Please ring the office or leave a message if your child is unwell. If your child becomes unwell in school, we will make sure that they are comfortable and that you are contacted to come and collect your child immediately. School must have current contact details.

Other information

  • Children will need to wear school uniform, sensible school shoes and bring a coat. We will be outside as much as possible.
  • The office area will be closed, as it is not big enough to maintain social distancing. If you wish to speak to somebody, please telephone between 9:30am and 2pm.
  • The provision for Breakfast club and After School Club will be available on a pre-booked basis only. You can do this through Parent Pay. Please ring the school office for further information.
  • Face coverings must be removed on entry to school. They will either be disposed of or securely bagged, depending on the type of mask. Children will then need to wash their hands.
  • We would encourage you to walk or cycle to school to avoid congestion. It is advised to limit the use of public transport.

We are looking forward to having all children back. If you have any further questions please email me at head.westfield@halton.gov.uk or contact the school office.

Take care, Miss Pope.
