Welcome to Cherry Class Year 1 and Year 2

Autumn 1

What are we reading in Cherry Class?

English

Our focus text for English is Beegu. Year 1 children will be using adjectives to describe characters and settings, orally composing questions, and writing their own alien narratives. Year 2 children will be using conjunctions (and, but), using question marks correctly when writing questions, using adjectives to describe, and writing their own alien narratives.

Our children will access Read Write Inc. Phonics sessions daily, developing their phonics knowledge further to decode words and increase fluency within their storybooks.

Maths

We follow the Oak Academy Maths programme daily and continue to develop our mathematical skills as we become super mathematicians. Year 1 are taught by Miss Pope and Year 2 by Mrs Crook.

We also have maths fluency sessions four afternoons per week. We follow the NCETM Mastering Number programme for these sessions.

We love Numbots! We have daily practice on Numbots using the class iPads, and we hope that children will continue to use Numbots at home.

Science

Year 1 and Year 2 will be learning about Animals Including Humans, with a focus on growth and life cycles.

Wider Curriculum

Our Art topic focuses on creating maps using different materials and media.

In History, the children will learn about How Am I Making History?

Computing will focus on the unit Technology Around Us.

In Music, the children will be learning about Seaside Dynamics.

In RE, we will explore the question: Does How We Treat the World Matter?

PE

PE takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please ensure that children come to school dressed in their full PE kit on these days.

On Wednesdays, the children will take part in Taekwondo with our external coach, Miss Rowles. On Fridays, the focus will be on fundamental movement skills with Mrs McIlroy.

Reading

At Westfield, we encourage all children to complete five reading sessions each week. These should be recorded on each child's individual reading account on the Boom Reader app.

The children are split into different Read Write Inc. Phonics groups while in school and will have a separate book to focus on each week. These books will be sent home in their book bags and should go home every night and return to school every morning.

We encourage all of our children to read five times per week.

We also have a library where children are encouraged to choose a book that interests them to take home and share with an adult. This is a 'reading for pleasure' book.

Our children have access to a range of online resources to support and enhance their learning. Below are links to some useful websites that children can use when they are not in school.

Usernames and passwords can be found on the parent letters sent home. All children are familiar with how to access and use these resources.
