Sycamore Class - KS2 Speech & Language Inclusion Base 2026 - 2027
Mrs Davies
Welcome to Sycamore Class!
We are really lucky to have different people who help us in Sycamore Class.
Here are our key adults:
- Mrs Davies - Class Teacher
- Miss McGreal - Teaching Assistant
- Mrs Thomson - Teaching Assistant
- Mr Usher - PPA Teacher (Monday and Wednesday afternoon)
Our KS2 Speech and Language Resource Base is set up to specifically support children with speech, language and communication needs. Sycamore Class is located within the main school building and accommodates pupils from Year 3 through to Year 6. It is a friendly and welcoming classroom where every child is supported to reach their full potential!
Pupils who access Sycamore Class will have:
- Access to a full, rich and relevant curriculum
- Opportunities to develop socially and academically
- Specialist support through small group teaching
- A language rich environment
All children in Sycamore Class also have a place within a mainstream class. The time the children spend in their mainstream class is dependent on pupils' individual needs.
What are we learning in Autumn 1?
English
This half term, we will be exploring two wonderful focus texts: Starbird by Sharon King-Chai and The Barnabus Project by The Fan Brothers.
Throughout our English lessons, we will explore themes of cooperation, courage, acceptance, following your dreams, freedom and friendship. We will develop a range of reading and writing skills through engaging activities and creative writing opportunities.
Whilst working across a range of writing outcomes, we will work towards two main pieces of writing:
Starbird: Writing a fable inspired by the style and structure of the original text.
The Barnabus Project: Writing a persuasive piece to promote a new pet shop where animals are free to choose their own homes.
Maths
During our maths lessons, the children in Sycamore Class work in small groups to access targeted learning. This means that pupils work with a key adult each day to focus on a learning objective that is specific to their needs. Our maths curriculum work spans from using Y1 - Y6 objectives.
Some areas of learning that we will cover this half term include:
- Counting
- Place value
- Column additon and subtraction
- Equivalence and compensation
Wider Curriculum
During the afternoon, pupils in Sycamore Class intergrate into our mainstream classes. They access learning with their peer groups whilst being supported by staff from the SLC Resource Base. For further information about what our pupils are learning this half term, please visit the relevant class webpage.
PE
Pupils in Sycamore Class need to come to school dressed in their PE kits on the following days:
Tuesday - Swimming (Y5/6 pupils)
Tuesday - PE (Y3/4 pupils)
Wednesday - Taekwondo (ALL pupils)
Reading
Reading books are changed every Friday. Each child will bring home a reading practice book linked to their reading ability. If they are accessing phonics, this will be a Read Write Inc book. Pupils will also bring home a reading for pleasure book. This is for you to share with them and enjoy!
We encourage children to read at home as often as possible and this should be recorded on our digital planner platform - Boom Reader.
