Welcome to Sycamore Class!
We are really lucky to have different people who help us in Sycamore Class.
Here are our key adults:
- Mrs Davies - Class Teacher
- Miss McGreal - Teaching Assistant
- Mrs Thomson - Teaching Assistant
- Miss Speakman - PPA Teacher (Thursday afternoon)
Our KS2 Speech and Language Resource Base is set up to specifically support children with speech, language and communication needs. Sycamore Class is located within the main school building and accommodates pupils from Year 3 through to Year 6. It is a friendly and welcoming classroom where every child is supported to reach their full potential!
Pupils who access Sycamore Class will have:
- Access to a full, rich and relevant curriculum
- Opportunities to develop socially and academically
- Specialist support through small group teaching
- A language rich environment
All children in Sycamore Class also have a place within a mainstream class. The time the children spend in their mainstream class is dependent on pupils' individual needs.
What are we learning in Spring 2?
English
This half term, our focus text is Wisp: A Story of Hope by Zana Fraillon and Grahame Baker-Smith.
The story is about a boy named Idris who lives in a refugee camp. Life in the camp is hard, and many people there feel sad because they miss their homes. One night, a tiny glowing light called a wisp floats through the camp. When people catch the wisp, it shows them happy memories of their old homes and families, which makes them feel hopeful again.
The story teaches that even in dark and difficult times, hope can shine like a small light. ✨
Children will be working towards writing a narrative from the POV of Wisp, whilst focusing on build an increasing range of sentence structures and using adverbs to express
time, place and cause.
Maths
During our maths lessons, the children in Sycamore Class work in small groups to access targeted learning. This means that pupils work with a key adult each day to focus on a learning objective that is specific to their needs.
Some areas of learning that we will cover this half term include:
- Column addtion
- Times tables - 3, 4 and 7
- Short division
Wider Curriculum
During the afternoon, pupils in Sycamore Class intergrate into our mainstream classes. They access learning with their peer groups whilst being supported by staff from the SLC Resource Base. For further information about what our pupils are learning this half term, please visit the relevant class webpage.
PE
Pupils in Sycamore Class need to come to school dressed in their PE kits on the following days:
Tuesday - Swimming (Y3/4 pupils)
Tuesday - PE (Y5/6 pupils)
Thursday - Cricket (All pupils)
Reading
Reading books are changed every Wednesday. Each child will bring home a reading practice book linked to their reading ability. If they are accessing phonics, this will be a Read Write Inc book. Pupils will also bring home a reading for pleasure book. This is for you to share with them and enjoy!
We encourage children to read at home as often as possible and this should be recorded on our digital planner platform - Boom Reader.
